Background
It is claimed that The American Bar was originally used to house
convicts waiting to be deported to penal colonies in
Virginia
during the late 18th Century.
There has been a pub on this site for over 200 years as the building
is first listed as The Shipwrights Arms in 1784.
By 1859 the name had changed to The Forfarshire Tavern with
Mr John Sturrock as the landlord.
The name quickly changed to The American Hotel - recorded in
1887 by Whites Hampshire and owned by a Mr Chamberlain.
During the Second World War The American was one of the most badly
damaged public houses in
Portsmouth.
On
6th July 1965
the name was changed to The American Bar.
The American Bar was taken over by its present owners David and
Karen Moore in 2003 & its name changed to Abaristo in 2009.
